ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Fitch ratings agency says it has downgraded Greece further into junk status, from ‘CCC’ to ‘C’ following the announcement of the details of the country’s debt swap deal with private creditors. The agency said Wednesday the downgrade indicated “that default is highly likely in the near term.”

Officials claim high turnout for Yemen vote

Vote counting is under way in Yemen, a day after a presidential election that is expected to confirm Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, the current vice president, as the country’s new leader. Electoral officials said on Wednesday that voter turnout reached 60 per cent nationwide, despite threats of violence and boycott calls in some parts of the Arabian peninsula nation.

Norway Summer Camp Called off After Utoya Massacre

The youth wing of Norway’s governing Labor Party says it will skip its annual island retreat after a gunman killed 69 people during last year’s event. Instead, the organization, known by its initials AUF, says it will hold a “dignified” commemoration of the July 22 massacre on Utoya island outside Oslo.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Baghram Airfield in Afghanistan on Tuesday, spurred by reports that soldiers had burned a copy of the Quran at the base. NATO officials acknowledged that Islamic religious materials, including copies of the Quran, had been improperly disposed at the base, but could not definitely say whether any was burned.


Strauss-Kahn in probe over prostitution ring

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will be questioned by French police as part of an investigation into a suspected prostitution ring. Strauss-Kahn will be questioned on Tuesday by police in the northern French city of Lille over suspected cross-border prostitution ring in France and neighbouring Belgium that has implicated police and other officials.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s Supreme Court has brought forward a hearing this week on the appeal of a Palestinian prisoner waging an unprecedented two-month hunger strike, court officials and his lawyers said Monday. A statement from the Supreme Court said Khader Adnan’s appeal will be held Tuesday.
